Saving the World One Server at a Time

Author: Helen Neudorf Time: 11.10.2022

We have only one world and we need to preserve it in good condition for our children and grandchildren. Information technology has improved efficiencies for years contributing to rising standards of living. Cloud services have improved efficiencies to new levels by utilizing datacenters to serve huge amounts of customers from the same hardware and software. This has improved immensely the sustainability  of IT solutions. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite, and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences of the ways in which resources are used. In simplest terms, sustainability is about our children and our grandchildren, and the world we will leave them. The situation is not that straightforward, of course.

Cryptocurrencies and rising electricity prices have created an explosive mix. You have probably heard that mining Bitcoin consumed the same level of electricity as all of Denmark in 2021. This makes it hard to claim that datacenters are efficient. But there have been times when a single tulip bulb was worth more than a house. After all dust has settled, we can find clear evidence of efficiency, security and flexibility provided by consolidation of IT systems.

Research conducted by Microsoft found that cloud data centers provide up to 93% energy efficiency compared to traditional server room solutions. And Microsoft's own cloud provides up to 98% per cent smaller carbon footprint than traditional data centers. Seems that keeping servers in-house does harm to our environment and is more expensive at the same time. This is just direct impact of using cloud data centers.

There are several associated benefits that make hosting central systems in a cloud datacenter a winning solution. Personnel managing those cloud data centers is usually better qualified and systems monitoring have higher levels of efficiency. That translates into faster service at lower cost and into better security by default.

Companies are using extensively cloud services like Office 365 / Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Dropbox, Salesforce. These services cover standardized business workflows that are, more or less, the same across businesses. What about workflows that enable differentiation and create competitive advantage?

Workflows that provide competitive advantage usually require specialized software, which relies on environments that provide security and scalability not available in in-house datacenters, but flexibility is available in cloud data centers.

Primend supports workflows in Office 365 environment by designing and implementing solutions on SharePoint, PowerApps, Power BI and Power Automate. We also manage virtual server environments in Azure and support platform services like Synapse, Data Factory, Azure SQL Database, Sentinel, Function Apps and so on. But sometimes business critical applications that provide competitive advantage to our customers require even more specialized environments. We have developed Primend Cloud offering to fulfil that void.

Primend Cloud is designed to host business critical applications, that require custom configurations and have high standards for reliability and security.

Business critical applications that provide competitive edge contain sensitive data that must stay secure under any circumstances. PrimendCloud utilizes modern data center technologies that scale capacity flexibly and keep every system well isolated to provide high level of security. We provide high level of system availability by storing active data on flash drives and can restore systems in minutes in case of data corruption. All systems are monitored and maintained by certified specialists. That way we can provide efficiency and security that in those special cases is even better than that provided by large cloud vendors.

Primend is expert on Microsoft technologies, and we have been voted Microsoft partner of the year six times during last eight years. Our specialists can conduct an audit your existing environment and draw up the best course of action to achieve sustainability and business efficiency at the same time.
